Contemporary Coil WeavingCoil weaving is the creation of a fabric by the winding of a thread into a spiral around an object. A single thread is wound around a tube, in this case a hollow plastic, to create the column of fabric which is coil weaving. The individual tubes are combined into a grouping which create the design. Sandy performs every part of the process from the selection of the thread, (often in consultation with clients) cutting of tubes, through the composition and selection of elements and assembly of the units, including matting and framing. From the whimsical to the majestic, her compositions are restrained but elegant. Self-taught through more than 25 years of off-loom weaving, Sandy brings this most ancient technique of weaving into contemporary designs. Pick-Up-Stix |
